Scout Projects

Autrey Mill is proud and appreciative of the many Boy Scout Eagle and Girl Scout Gold projects that have added so much to the preserve over its 25+ year history. Some recent statistics:

Project: Swing Arbor above the Butterfly Garden
Completion: December 2017

Sharavanan built a second Swing Arbor on the hill above the Butterfly Garden. It’s very popular with bird watchers and others wanting to sit back and relax as it faces the water reservoir.

Project: Teepee Sandbox
Completion: December 2017

Stephen built a 12′ Teepee, complete with sandbox at the bottom, in the new Heritage Exploration Zone. In addition, he built a bench for use there and cleaned up the entire zone including outlining the perimeter with stones.

Project: Heritage Garden Fence
Completion: November 2017

Rounak upgraded the Heritage Garden Fence by removing the netting from post-to-post and adding four slats and wired fencing to create an actual fence. In addition, he stained the slats to preserve it longer. This fence will keep the deer and smaller critters out allowing the vegetables grown to be used in education classes and feeding our animals.

Project: Chicking Coop ‘Front Yard’
Completion: November 2017

Aidan built a ‘front yard’ enclosure on the front of the chicken coop. This allows easier access for staff to let the chickens out and to clean from the back, but more importantly gives the chickens plenty of protected space to roam during the day.

Project: Trail Bridge Ramps
Completion: October 2017

Joshua added ramps to both sides of three bridges along the Perimeter Trail near the Mill Site Foundation Stones. The side ramps will allow for easier access for visitors. In addition, Joshua cleaned the three bridges.

Project: Butterfly Garden Fence
Completion: October 2017

Rohan upgraded the Buttefly Garden Fence by removing the netting from post-to-post and adding four slats to create an actual fence. In addition, he had to add/repost a few posts as well as cut them all to the same height. This fence will keep the deer out and allow the garden to thrive attracting more butterflies.

Project: Butterfly Garden Path & Rain Water Buckets
Completion: October 2017

Louis built the first of two paths in the Butterfly Gardens allowing visitors to walk through the gardens and observe the flowers. He also built two watering bucket posts that will catch rain water and can then be used to later water the gardens via gravity through the slow-drip hoses connected.

Project: Walking Stick Corral & Sticks
Completion: September 2017

Grayson built one walking stick corral with 80 walking sticks. The corral is at the picnic shelter on the south side of the property. In addition, Grayson thinned out the Wildflower Trail to allow better growth, using the sticks he thinned out to make his walking sticks.

Project: Split Rail Fence

Ojas built the second of two sections of split rail fence along the Perimeter Trail West next to the bridge crossing the ravine. His section is closest to the Pole Barn.

Alex built an ‘Unnatural Corral’ on the Miller’s Trail, complete with an explanation board and answer sheet. We will use this in our education classes and camps, but visitors can also play this ‘find me’ game to find elements in the corral that should not belong in the natural environment.

Project: Hiking Trail – South Loop Connector to Creek Access
Completion: July 2017

Tristan built two sections of a hiking trail on each side of Sal’s Creek, this new trail is now called the ‘Creek Pass’. They connect the new south side/loop of the Perimeter Trail to the Spur Trail on the west side of the creek via the creek-access steps.

Briggs built a 12′ long bridge over a ravine on the Perimeter Trail, near the Mill Site Foundation Stones. Each side of the bridge also has ramps for easier access for visitors. The existing bridge was beginning to rot and had a huge step off of one side.

Maanas built 2 compost bins, with a sign to explain why you would compost, in the garden areas. The compost bins will be used in classes and camps at Autrey Mill to educate on composting.

Sergio built an outdoor turtle enclosure next to the backdoor ramp of the Visitor Center. The enclosure included a locking lid (for protection) and a pond. Our box turtles were moved from inside to this enclosure where they are much happier.

Matthew built a 20′ Boardwalk section at the bottom of the Wildflower Trail. The new boardwalks were necessary due to the muddy conditions after a good rain.

Project: Living Lab Enhancement
Completion: December 2016

Nicole upgraded the Living Lab that is inside the Visitor Center, including painting the cabinets with local flowers, upgrading the counters (new paint and animal tracks for the top, new glass on the top, and curtains underneath), and making 2 education posters that correspond to the artwork on the cabinets and countertop.

Sean built one of the nine new 250′-300′ sections of hiking trails on the far south side/loop of the Autrey Mill Property. His section was specifically in the cut-thru of the loop.

Project: Creek Access / Steps on South Loop Hiking Trail
Completion: November 2016

Holden built two sets of staircases in the creek embankments on the far south side/loop of the Autrey Mill Property, now known as the ‘Creek Pass’. This connects the new south-side of the Perimeter Trail with the existing Spur Trail on the opposite side of the creek and offers visitors a unique experience in crossing through the creek instead of on a bridge over the creek.

Kevin built a new “cubbie” rack in the Program Barn to be used for campers to store their items during camp. In addition, he tidied up the Nature Classroom with new paint on the window/room trim and door.

Andy built a Playfort at the new Nature Exploration Zone. It was built primarily out of shipping pallets, natural sticks, and rope to show how materials can be re-purposed instead of disposed of.

Project: Chicken Run and Animal Feeder
Completion: October 2016

Aidan built a “chicken run” for our chickens. This allows us to put the chickens in the “chicken run” and move them around in order to give them other places to hunt for bugs. This protects the chickens so a volunteer doesn’t have to be next to the chickens at all times when outside of their main enclosure. In addition, Aidan built a 2nd Animal Feeder so guests can feed the chickens, ducks, and bunnies with healthy food.

Thomas built out the “T” boardwalk at the bottom of the Wildflower Trail into a “square” to be used for an outdoor classroom. In addition, he also added steps onto the front of the boardwalk for easy access off the boardwalk and to the creek.

Connor built a Play Bridge at the new Nature Exploration Zone. The bridge twists and turns with a ramp on each side. The hand rails are made out of natural sticks and rope. Come walk across it!

Brandon built the arbor at the head entrance to the Warsaw Trail, beside the Warsaw Church. In addition, he built a split-rail fence around the commemorative tree next to the arbor to help protect it. The tree was planted a few years back in in memory of long-time board member Cheryl.

Eman developed 6 letterboxes, placing 3 each in a series on Autrey Mill property. She also put together backpacks with information on letterboxing so families could check them out from the Visitor Center and learn about letterboxing.

Project: Adironduck and Bunny Hutch Brick Base

Vishal built what we love to call an “Adironduck” to provide shelter for two of our ducks. In addition, Vishal also built a brick-base for the existing Bunny Hutch at the time (that hutch was replaced by another project later in the year to fit into the new brick base).

Project: Crossover Bridge
Completion: February 2016

David built a Crossover Bridge and Easel. The 12 planks of the bridge display the 12 points of the Scout Law. The Scout Law can be displayed on the easel and then the bridge can be “built” during a crossover ceremony. To make the bridge multi-functional, the opposite side of the planks have no words so any other non-Boy Scout group could use it. Boy Scout and other groups renting facilities at Autrey Mill can request use of the bridge during their rental.

Cassidy completely renovated the Nature Classroom, including new paint on the walls, trim, and bookshelf. She also installed a new wall Chalkboard. In addition, she put a new sign outside labeling the Program Barn and the Nature Classroom.

Henry built three low element challenges on the trails on the south side of the Autrey Mill Property. The low elements challenges include (1) spider-web [can you get your group through different web openings without touching the web?], (2) pole & tire [can you get the tire off the pole?], and (3) wood plank [can you successfully lay out 4 planks across the 5 posts and walk across, without touching the ground at any time?].

Steven did some much needed upgrades to our outdoor Amphitheater that is located behind the Tenant Farmhouse. The upgrades included steps across the entire front of the stage, steps on the left side of the stage, and a ramp on the right side of the stage.

Daniel built a new path from the front of the Warsaw church around the side and to the back steps. In addition, he cleaned and repainted the arbor behind the Warsaw Church.

Jacob built the outdoor wall enclosure in the Star Pond area that allows Pebbles to freely roam outside.

Powell built two Walking Stick Corrals with 20 walking sticks each. The corrals are at the head of the River Trail and the Forest Trail.

Jake built two sand “dig tables”. One table is full of sand and used in our programming to dig for items or make shapes in the sand. The 2nd table is screened in order to sift the items out from the sand. The tables are located on the left side of the Program Barn.

Boyd built the firepit that is next to the Pole Barn, replacing the stacked bricks on the ground. In addition to be 18″ deep with gravel at the bottom, there is also a drain and a locking mechanism for when the firepit is not in use. Boyd also built a holder for stacking up firewood.
