Autrey Mill Nature Preserve offers a variety of programs that:
- Are designed as an extension of the classroom to provide a wonderful educational experience for both students and teachers
- Include engaging, hands-on learning activities
- Are consistent with the Georgia Educational Standards for grades K-8
- Can be experienced at Autrey Mill or brought to your site
All programs can be adapted for content and program length to satisfy a group’s needs. Contact us to customize your field trip.
Nature & Heritage Field Trips
These programs are all 2 hours in length with 90 minutes of curriculum and 30 minutes use of our Pole Barn for lunch or snack. These programs are best suited to groups sizes of 40 or less and grades K-8. For larger groups we offer the Reptile Program.
The program fee is $10 per child participant. An upfront fee of %50 or $100 (program minimum) is due upfront to reserve your date. Any remaining total is due on the day of your program. View Georgia Educational Standards covered.
Nature Field TripsVisit the habitats, flora and fauna of Autrey Mill’s 46-acre nature preserve. In addition, the Visitor Center features dioramas of woodland animals and a collection of live reptiles and amphibians. |

Reptiles | Students will get the opportunity to meet reptiles native to Georgia and a few from around the world. They will also learn about the classification of species. |
Wonders of Wetlands | This program includes a hike to Sal’s Creek and Autrey Mill’s wetlands with a lesson on water pollution and conservation. We will survey the creek to determine its health through the observation of indicator species. Students will record their observations in a field journal. |
Finding Fish | Using the Japanese tradition of fish printing called Gyotaku, students will learn basic fish anatomy and adaptations. |
Basic Nature Program | Students will join us on a guided hike, complete a hands-on activity, meet our animals, and more. |
Heritage Field TripsVisit Autrey Mill’s historic buildings, furnishings, artifact collections, plus heritage activities to present topics of local and Georgia history. |

History Hunters | Students will use their skills of deduction to gain a better understanding of what life was like for Georgia settlers in the late 1800s. Their hands will get dirty as they go digging for history. They will play games from the past, and learn how to budget using rations. |
a-MAZE-ing Farm History | Students will receive hands on experience with historic artifacts that helped shape the land. They will hear how Native American’s gardens thrived by using the technique of polyculture. The lesson will include stories, heritage building tours, games, and the opportunity to plant a seed. |
Georgia Gold Fever | Catch gold fever at Autrey Mill! Students will learn about the 1800’s Land Lottery and discover the mineral that shaped our state. They will receive hands on opportunities to pan for gold, solve gold riddles. |
Nature/Heritage Combination Field Trips
These programs combine both nature and history curriculum. The program is 120 minutes of curriculum and 30 minutes use of our Pole Barn for lunch or snack. These programs are best suited to groups sizes of 20 or less and grades K-8.

Using Resources Wisely | Students will explore how Native Americans like the Creek and Cherokee used natural resources for hunting, farming, medicine, shelter, clothing, and transportation. Students will learn the concepts of reducing, reusing and recycling. This program includes a Native American Story Time featuring one of our animals. |
Animal Architects | Students will learn the different building techniques animals use by exploring a variety of stations and constructing a field journal. The program concludes with meeting a real life animal architect. |
Basic Combination Program | Both nature and history are featured on this hands-on field trip. |
Custom Program | Our staff will work with teachers to develop a program suited to their curriculum. |

Thanks to the generosity of the Country Club of the South’s Charity Guild we are able to offer of Library Programs at a reduced rate of $100 flat and schedule at the availability of AMNP staff. |
Recycling Program | Storytime: The Lorax, recycling relay, and seed bomb craft |
Reptile Program | Storytime: Miles and Miles of Reptiles, turtle races, reptile encounter, and reptile nature-facts. |
Chicken, Chicken, Who’s got my egg? | Storytime: The Cow that Laid an Egg, egg games, egg-sploration, and chicken encounter. |
Snakes! | Storytime: Amazing Snakes, snake craft, and snake encounter. |
Animal Architects | Verbal story telling of “13 Moons on a Turtle’s Back,” keystone species demonstration, animal architect nature-facts, and meet and greet with the African Spurred Tortoise, Pebbles. |

Leadership Hike | On the hike participants will discover the importance of trust and communication along with survival skill through a series of activities and games. |
Programs for Preschool Groups
These programs are all 1.5 hours in length and designed as a “grownup and me” or group experience. Each class topic includes a story, craft, hands on animal encounter, and outdoor exploration.
The program fee is $10 per child participant. An upfront fee of %50 or $100 (program minimum) is due upfront to reserve your date. Any remaining total is due on the day of your program.
